You don't want to sleep quite yet. You go on your phone and text your childhood best friend.
"Jackie!! I just got a new frog and I'm so excited."
You and Jackie grew up together, but drifted apart as they started handing
out with the "cool kids" while you stayed your nerdy, comic-book reading
self. They are also the one you currently have an uncontainable crush on.
You wait for a reply, but it never comes. You let go of the anticipation
and decide to scroll through Instagram instead. Your heart breaks as you
see a post made by Jackie 2 minutes ago.
"Loved tonight" their caption reads. Seems like they went out on a movie
night with the popular kids. You go to sleep feeling even more lonely than
before.
It's morning. You reach for your phone as the alarm beeps. It's way to early, but what can you do? American high schoolers don't get time to sleep. You fight off the urge to stay in bed longer and get up. You check your phone, hoping for a text from Jackie, but there are no notifications. You sigh and get ready.
